studying in taiwan?
I'm keen to take up a master degree in journalism in National Taiwan University. I've a few questions here: 1) I'm good in Chinese but am only exposed to Simplified Chinese. I can read Traditional Chinese but can't really write (on the other hand, typing wouldn't be a problem because I can recognise the characters). Will the inability to write Traditional Chinese be a problem? Or is there any chance I could actually write my exam scripts in Simplified Chinese? 2) Is it possible to complete the degree in 1-1.5 years? I know that traditionally, master degrees are completed in about 2 years, but I do wish to complete it in a shorter period of time. Will really appreciate any form of suggestions or comments. If you're a current NTU student or an international student in Taiwan, or if you have lots of knowledge regarding this, I'll really appreciate it if you could drop me an email at xdette@hotmail.com for further correspondence. 1) i doubt so...sc is not popular or as the content of education for taiwanese educational system..so only using informally will do it, u probably have to learn how to write in tc during summer then take the classes 2) depend on the program, u grad or undergrad? its the same else where though...of course if u prefer to finish master in 1 or 1.5, u can appeal for school' credits system and go for overload and then u should be able to take more classes. The point is you can only jump or go over load to finish quicker though. 3) my best suggestion is you learn tc in china then go to NTU later...

1. The Universities here all expect your written work to be in Traditional Chinese (unless of course your taking one of the special English courses some places offer). Saying as your Chinese is already really good, why don't you just take a little time to learn Traditional - it's not all that difficult and you'll end up with a deeper appreciation for the language, not to mention - you'll actually be able to see the meaning within the characters! I actually have a lot of exp with the Chinese Culture University, they do indeed have a good Mandarin learning centre; however, more importantly - I actually know that if students use simplified characters in an exam or thesis they will get points deducted... haha, the younger generation is so used to typing that they sometimes forget how to write the traditional character for a certain word and just opt to write the simplified version instead.

I have studied in Taiwan You will have to read and write in the traditional characters. You may have to go to a Mandarin training center before you actually enter as a matriculated student. try Chinese Culture University in Taipei Taiwan

Can someone tell me about the lifestyle/education in Taiwan?
Can someone tell me about the lifestyle/education in Taiwan?
I would like to hear opinions from people that have been or lived there. My parents are not Asian but they were both raised in Asia. They want me to consider going to TW..to study at a university.and make a lifestly over there. Now I don't know nothin bout TW except its like next to China. I feel that if I end up goin there, I'll be outta place and unexcepted, especially when my IQ is..um...looooow compare to the student in TW. I've heard that the education there is ridiculously harsh! and people here in America still complain that there's too much work to be done. What do TW have for an adventurous, outgoing, kinda ghetto type of person?

Well my piano teacher is from Taiwan, and she said, when she was a little girl, all the girls had to have short bobs at school, short nails, and no make-up when they were teens. But it could be different now.

You just need a passing grade to graduate. Most of the textbooks are in English (not Chinese). According the newspaper, 99% of the students, who took the joint college examination this year, are eligible to go to colleges or univeristies. does GPA have a strong influence on my application for college?
i am a high school student from Taiwan . i transferred to NYC when i was in grade 10 which means that i didn't study the ninth grade in the US so my grade-nine GPA was transferred and some of my credits were denied due to some regulations of the US educational system. if i score high on both the two of the critical exams -- TOEFL and SAT...can these high sores and extracurriculars and some awards of competitions cover the flaw in my GPA?

It sounds like you have some special circumstances. I think that most schools will look at your record and take that into account (that you transferred and had difficulty with your credits), and will try not to hold it against you. Also, a high SAT score should help. I have never taken the TOEFL, but I suspect the better you perform the better off you will be as an applicant (although there are other parts of your application that help to indicate your proficiency in English as well). One final thing you have working in your favor is that you came from overseas. Colleges, generally speaking, like to include people of diverse cultural, social, and linguistic backgrounds in their classes, so you make a good applicant in that respect. GPA is considered, but I had a 2.8 and got into a pretty tough school because my scores on both the ACT and SAT were very high. So just go for it, you never know until you try.

Many colleges list GPA as being more important than SAT scores. GPA is from the entire year, SAT is from 1 or 2 days. Many colleges are actually going SAT/ACT free. No tests scores required. If you EXPLAIN to the college what happened however, I am sure they would totally understand the situation and your test scores for the SAT would back that up. Many admission officers think that is you have a low GPA and high test scores that you are smart but lazy. You have a reason for the lower GPA which shows that is NOT the case with you. On the other hand low test scores with a high GPA can show that one does not test well, isn't very good at reasoning but can handle class work, or that they may have been ill on test day.

NO school values the sat more than the gpa. its the other way around- they look at your gpa first and foremost before ANYTHING. it is by far the most important thing on your app, period. and to answer your question, it depends how low your gpa is; many schools have a cutoff- as in they will not even look at the students application if their gpa is under, say a 2.5 (thats for most mid or lower-ranked state schools, not the more prestigious colleges; theirs would be substantially higher). i guess the answer to this depends on what schools you are applying to- if its harvard, yale, brow, upenn, etc, they want the whole package- you cant have any flaws in your application at all. sat is important, but not nearly coming close to the importance of the gpa- you took the sat in one day and your gpa shows your dedication to school throughout the last 4 years

There is a foreign exchange student from Taiwan joining my class after spring break. Is there anything I could do to make her visit pleasurable? We do not know how much English she speaks. I am in 7th grade.

where should I get a pen pal at junior high or senior from the Internet?
I'm a sily junior high student in Taiwan. I'd like to know about more about western cultures but it's hard for me to get anything at this crazy place and I start thinking about getting a penpal in my age. But I don't know how to start it at all, I don't have these experiences. C'mon please help me, i'm trying to be one of you guys. Thanks for answering my question, I'm forteen and a piano player (pop,,jazz music) It's okay to talk about anything with me, I feel a little hard to break the ice in my life but I think I must do, but where should I go?
