Can I get a translator job in America?
I'm a senior college student from Taiwan, my major is Russian language. I've learned Russian for 4 years & also English for over 10 years. After graduation, I plan to get a master degree from school for translators and interpreters in America. Just wondering if I can get a good job as a translator over there, either Russian-English or Chinese-English is okay. Anyone can help me?

Overall, I believe that is very difficult to get a good paying job as a translator. You have to remember that this is America and that means that there are millions of people who speak many languages and demand may not be very high. In the business world you might be able to get a job where your languages might be needed from time to time. A good paying job with a corporation as an official company translator might be a great job opportunity for you. You might also consider working for a University or a Hospital. Most translating jobs in America are "on call" basis and pay only by the hour. These jobs do pay well, but are not a good source of constant income and sometimes are considered part time employment. Yes you can. One place to start is in the court system. There are many different languages being spoke by people in the courtroom all the time. Those people need translators and the court system is hiring. I don't know how it pays, but if you are looking for a job, you might want to try there first and then you can look for something else if you don't like that.

Dude, to tell you, it's not worth your time to get a master's degree just so you can translate. I have relatives who only have a HS diploma, some even none, went into the translating business. It's not such a high paying job either.

If you know what you want to major in, look for schools with good programs for that. Then look online at their website for the requirements.

You have a competitive chance at getting in to some prestigious schools... Brown, Columbia, Johns Hopkins, etc. Your writing is a bit low, but it's still ok. How's ur GPA? are those ur only extra curriculars? are u applying from Taiwan or from the states? How's ur TOEFL score? what do u want to study?

Volunteer Abroad Program in Taiwan?
Does anyone know of a good volunteer abroad program in Taiwan? for a high school student? I can't seem to find any online. What my friend(s) and I wish to do is find a good volunteer abroad program in Taiwan so we can help teach english to young children or anything else necessary. We're all minors between the ages of 16 and 17. Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Professional teachers in Taiwan usually have a degree and a TEFL certificate. If you go there as a volunteer this means that you are underqualified and - effectively - taking work away from a proper teacher. Meanwhile in a lot of cases the class you are teaching have paid in full for an English teacher. This is an unfortunate situation but in many, many cases volunteer placements are a money making exercise for the business which arranges them. If you want o volunteer, look for something local to you where you will do some good - teaching English to immigrants or refugees, for example.

how much is the cost of living in Tainan, Taiwan?
international student in Southern Taiwan University @ We Never Left: can you give me a rough estimate on that (I am referring to my previous question about living expenses in Taiwan)? My scholarship grant waived tuition & monthly dorm fees, so that will be excluded to the budget. However, I am not certain about insurances & visa application, or whatever dues that I will be compelled to do so. Merely, my concerns are food (in & out of the campus), transport, books, laptop/notebook (should I buy one there or better to bring one? which is more expensive?). Those are my concerns by far.. Thank you.

Any recommendations for cheap and good hostels in Taipei?
This will be my first trip to Taiwan. I am a college student in the United States, and am fluent in Mandarin Chinese so language is not a problem. I plan to visit for a week sometime after Christmas and over the New Year, and hope to catch the festive season celebrations. I would like some information about cheap and good hostels in Taipei, and how much I should budget for a week's holiday. Thanks!

I am right now doing this research paper about Bible vs. Homosexuality, and I want to know if there's any way that I can find any information online about heterosexual Christians, especially biblical scholars who are willing to stand up and speak for the gay people/ community, about their rights and everything? There is no Bible Vs Homosexuality. Many human behaviours are labeled as a sin. Its in fact the Bible Vs Humans. The problem is some people elect to ignore the parts of the bible that does not fit into their own life style yet they will list parts that suites them.

I am very experiencing with Christians Bible fellowship before and I am gay also I researched in the bible actually talking about gay and lesbian there is some of them in old and new testments they are not allowed homosexuality activies. therefore my theory Why God create us that many of lives today babies born with gay or lesbian so I believe that God himself create us in lust and sex in our human ways there is no need to listen what church told us that is very wrong in sexual sins. do not pay attention to them only God could judge us not people. you can link on the internet (a prayer for Bobby lifetime movies) go yahoo search and find what time what day you gonna watch it making me sad and crying those movies very interesting! good luck with your research :)

There is a book that I read 20 years ago that dealt with homosexuality in the Bible. It discussed Ruth and Naomi, lesbians in the Bible. And the gay relationship between King David and Jonathan. It points out that there were gay people in Biblical times but no one was bothered by them and most people would merely chuckle when they saw two same sex people holding hands. Being gay was not against Church doctrine until the Council of Trent when Darwinism and Homosexuality were deemed unacceptible in the Church. Basically it was MAN that determined that being gay was wrong ... it was never addressed by God. The Bible has 6 admonitions against frivolous gay sex but there are 166 warnings about frivolous hetero sex. Try to find the book by googling it. If you can't find it I might be able to uncover it if I dig through my shed. I used to have about 6 copies left, just before I moved. You can email me if you need me to find out the name and source.
