Where would you be studying? It really depends on where you are but I suspect you'd have no problems at all at any US university. In San Francisco the problem you may encounter is that you'd have to try very hard to meet non-Chinese students. You could probably live your entire life there without speaking a word of English. Good luck to you.

What do we have in America that they don't have in Taiwan?

What do we have in America that they don't have in Taiwan?
We have a foreign exchange student in Taiwan and we want to send her something cute and special but most things we have here they have there. What kinds of send-able foods do we have?
Taiwan - 8 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
big eyes! no but serriously, nothing! because taiwan is technicaly part of china, and since almost everything we owe in the us comes from china, you would be giving her, her own stuff. you should give her a native american artifact. thats the only thing we have that wasnt made in a foreign country.
2 :
Brian, it's obvious you've never been there. Taiwan is a different country, it's like you saying north and south Korea are the same, different writing system, government, currency, passport, military, etc. Until recently it was even impossibly to fly directly from one to the other. Things in the US labeled as made in China are made in China, there aren't as many made in Taiwan products anymore. But, to answer the original question, they do have everything there but some things are way more expensive. My friends there are always looking for Jeans (any American brand, but mostly Levi's), chocolate (not the plain kind but like Kisses with nuts, or dark chocolate), sour gummy candy, when I'm sending something I will usually look for a cute tin with the candy inside, like a giant M&M head with M&M's inside for example. When you send it use your own packaging and send it 1st class at the post office, trust me on this one, much cheaper and still get's there in 7 days.
3 :
Cheese is not common there.
4 :
Cheez Whiz. I have never seen aerosol cheese in Taiwan, but it is sold everywhere in America.
5 :
Safety in the knowledge that hundreds of Chinese missiles are not being pointed at them from bases along China's SE coast.
6 :
root beer, Twinkies, butterfingers, Dairy Queen :P
7 :
I don't recommend you send foods, because if she's from Taiwan, then she'll probably prefer Chinese food. and there's no food in US that you can get that is better or even comparable to what she can get in Taiwan. This is why a lot of Taiwanese in America or Canada travel back to Taiwan for a few months to literally enjoy the food there. I suggest you send something else other than food... oh and if you do decide to send cheese, make sure she actually likes cheese! A lot of Chinese people don't like cheese (me included). Cheese makes me want to barf, and i'm not alone in this thinking.
8 :
maybe diet root beer, diet pepsi, twinkies, any sugar free drinks but for zero and diet coke.

Should I dorm with an international student from Taiwan?

Should I dorm with an international student from Taiwan?
I've been looking for a roommate for college next year, and the college I'm going to has an online service where you can choose your roommate, and they show you their email/facebook so you can get to know them. So I've been adding a lot of people on facebook to see who would like to be my roommate, and sending messages to get to know them. I've sent out at least 10 messages, and so far about 5 people have responded: 2 decided to go to a different college, one girl isn't interested in a roommate, one girl is pretty nice but not completely sure if she'll live on campus, and one girl is from Taiwan. So far, the girl from Taiwan has been the nicest and seems most excited about getting to know me and getting a roommate, and she is sure about her living situation. I've always loved Asian culture, and I think rooming with her would be really cool. However, if I were to room with her, I wouldn't be able to live in the engineering hall (I'm majoring in computer science). My parents seem to think it would be nice to know her, but weird to live with her. I've always been more interested in other cultures than my parents, though, so I'm only half listening to them. :P So, what do you guys think I should do? Do you have any experiences with international students? Thanks for yout input!

High School Student Teach English in Taiwan/China?

High School Student Teach English in Taiwan/China?
Can anyone tell me any programs for an American high school student to teach English in Taiwan or China over the summer for 2010.

I know of none. but it could be done like tutoring. Many of the countries use Brittish English not American English so you may run into that. I doubt a high school student could teach at college but might be able to volunteer or teach as tutor. You may have to have the equivalent of a green card. Why not write to the Chinese Embasy if you wish to go to china or to the Taiwanese Embassy if you want to go to Taiwan. Don't word it as you did above though as there is animosity between the two as one considers themselves China in exile and the other are the revolutinary leadership on the mainland. Good luck to you.

American student, going to Taiwan for 1 year of College...completely clueless, please help.?
Currently, I'm a high school student in America. I was raised here so I only speak and write in English, however I am fluent in Chinese but unfortunately I'm illiterate. My parents split up when I was little and my dad has requested me to spend 1 year in Taiwan. Could somebody please explain to me if there are colleges in Taiwan for ENGLISH speaking students? And the process to transfer back to American Universities after 1st year? Or is it possible at all?

International students / expatriates in Taiwan, your advice please?
I am considering to take up a short-term cooking course, which may span a few months, in Taiwan. How do I apply for a student visa to stay there for that period of time? Do I need to get their local medical insurance policy first, in case I got to visit a GP? What about opening a savings account? What documents to produce to a bank, other than my passport? Do you have any good online sources on study / living in Taiwan?

You may need a VISA to visit China but not Hong Kong. The easiest thing to do is to check with a local travel agency in Taiwan. Travel agencies there handle a lot of travel to HK and China and they will be able to help you.

How can a college student in the U.S. find summer entry jobs/internships in Taipei, Taiwan?
I'm a Freshman with a business intended major in the U.S. and I'm interested in a 2010 summer job or internship in Taipei, Taiwan. Is there a free website or service where I can post my resume for potential Taipei employers? Or some other way I can get myself noticed there? Oh, and I can speak basic mandarin

Short answer is : Taiwan is a very saturated market today. Unless you know people, there's little to expect. But as always, you could get lucky. I'm not particularly knowledgeable in what sites to post (And it depends on whether you know Chinese, obviously) I'd even start with networking sites like facebook, myspace and ask around.
2 :
it will cost you a fortune in living expenses over there to do that-probably a lot more thanb any internship would pay

when you've got a student visa, will you get one way or roundtrip ticket to taiwan?
We are going to Taiwan to study and we applied for a student visa but in the visa it was placed there visitor visa valid for 6 months...do we need to purchase a roundtrip ticket or a one way will do?

You'll probably need a roundtrip ticket. Contact the embassy and ask them.
2 :
There must be a misunderstanding in your visa application. you should consult the embassy as it would be questioned in time of your departure or arrival on that country.. Yes, purchasing a round trip ticket is always a must if you are a visitor in any country or even a student needs to provide one. Requirements for student's visa and visitor's visa are not the same, make sure that you have complete documents applying for a student's visa including the guarantor.

The market in Taiwan is pretty well saturated at the moment if you are interested in business. You could always study business in Taiwan after your studies in the USA. This would probably ensure you find a job, and give you a better understanding of business practices there, rather than just turning up with a shiny new qualification but no idea of the culture. Why not an MBA at NTU (National Taiwan University)? It's very prestigious, and programmes are run in English and Chinese - maybe you should move there now!

Student Visas for american students are about $120 you also need an acceptance letter from the school, and 3000 usd in a bank statement to give to the office to prove you can support yourself. (your parents account is fine too) A round trip plane ticket will cost over 1000. (generally 1400) isuggest cathay pacific, they are very customer friendly and the food is not bad. personal tvs with games. You can apply for a visa at a Taipei economic office in america. There is one in NYC the other is in California? more useful info here: http://www.boca.gov.tw/ct.asp?xItem=1305&CtNode=109&mp=2

Everything (Language in Class, Test, Exams, and homework) are in Chinese.
2 :
yeah, everything will be taught in chinese, so you have to know how to read and write it too, at a high level. Writing and reading is part of the "tool box" that you need to succeed in any class. I am sorry, but I just think that the professors will teach in mandarin, the assignments will be in mandarin and expect you to write mandarin well if you want to pass. Maybe you can try to improve your writing skills first and then go back?

Yes, absolutely. It is considered a First World Country, and your life in Taiwan will be the same as your life in America. The only major difference with be the difficulties with Language: English is not really spoken by large sectors of the population. You will definitely have a good time in shopping there and visiting the provinces - there are lots of interesting places so see. depends on acceptance by the college/univ and your nationality. taiwan edu is valid. so u have to check with the canadian school if they're willing to accept transfer. if they do, they will issue letter of acceptance which u could then go and get a visa. so pl dont drop sch til u get place and visa.

It's not that difficult. Discuss the issue with the school's advisors and they will help you. As long as the school can help her get the I-20, there shouldn't be any problem getting the student visa.

Hello! I'm an overseas foreign worker from Philippines, I would like to apply from Taiwan for Canada. How long does it take to process for a student visa? What requirements do I need to settle? How about applying for other visas such as work and immigrant, which one is more easy and fast? Thanks for your suggestions or comments you could share to me.

"easy and fast". Two words immigration don't like to hear. Another red flag for them will be that you aren't applying from your own country.
2 :
You need to get a work visa first before you can even come here. Unless you are a student you cannot apply for a student visa. If you are a student you'll have to show a letter of acceptance to a Canadian university first. http://www.cic.gc.ca/english/index.asp
3 :
You need to apply to a Canadian college or university and be accepted before you can get a student visa. Once you are accepted the visa will be straight forward. However, you will pay very high tuition and may not work off campus. Otherwise, the work visa application information and forms are here:

Why didn't you ask the "social coordinator"? She should have told you what to expect. I have friends in Taiwan, and I have visited them, and they have visited me, and I didn't have any real culture shock. Maybe it is more of a generational thing. I noticed in some places, there is a sign that one cannot put toilet paper in the toilet (because it clogs the pipes). There is a plastic bucket by the toilet for paper that you have just used to wipe yourself. But that was only in cheap, old places.

I also applied my student visa in Bangkok and showed a bank statement with more then 100000 NT on it. Heard from a friend that they refused to give a visa because his bank statement just showed about 70000NT. So if you want to be sure a 100000NT is better. By the way do you know that the visa from Bangkok is a non extenable one. If you want to stay longer than 2 months you have to go to the ministry of foreign affairs to change it into an extenable one. good luck
