Is there any teacher who ever had a student with ADD?

Is there any teacher who ever had a student with ADD?
Im a teacher in Taiwan, my new student has ADD. (The class is one-on-one) Ive meet that 3rd-grade boy once his mother told me he's got ADD and is currently under medical controlling during the meeting I found him hardly get himself focused He could give me 100 reasons for not sitting on the chair I had him take a test He couldnt get it done in a proper period of time after he finished like 1/3 of it he told me he doesnt know how to do the rest I went thru the questions he'd solved and found him actually knows how to do it so I said "U know how to do it, u just simply want me to give u the answers, try read the questions carefully and answer them. then he went through other 2 or 3 Qs said again that he really doesnt understand so I tried to lead him thru the Qs... it still seemed like he does know how to do it.. He's changed his teacher for times and his mother's concern isnt to get him focused she just simply wants him to get good grades is there anyone could give me some directions Thanks everyone, I think all the tips might be helpful. I'm going to start my first class next week, wish me luck! :P

It sounds like he's just being a kid who doesn't want to do his work. I don't believe in ADD. I think it's what doctors tell mothers because doctors can't say, "You have failed to discipline your child and teach him how to discipline himself. As a result, he understands no limits and has no boundaries." I had a student last year in 11th grade whose mom told me he was "ADD." This child was funny and delightful. He was so bored with school that he had a hard time listening. He would blurt out whatever came into his head. He sat and drew pictures. I really looked forward to having him in class. Then his mom put him on ADD medication and he became a zombie. It was so sad. It was like his personality disappeared.
2 :
He may not be ADD, he may be kinesthetic. Kinesthetic kids need to move, do, or build in order to learn - the physical movement is what stimulates the learning centers in the brain. Sitting still may actually inhibit him from learning, since he has to focus so hard on being still that he can't focus on anything else. I would suggest giving him a little test - let him get up and move around calmly (walk around, hold a stress ball, something like that) while you ask him the questions. Likely, while he's moving, he'll be able to explain them to you and/or dramatize them. Many kids who are "diagnosed" ADD are simply kinesthetic learners. I believe ADD does exist - it's a brain chemical imbalance that causes a person to not be able to focus - but I don't believe it's anywhere near as common as it's made out to be. Rather, kinesthetic learners just don't fit into the classroom model of "sit still and do your work", so they're medicated into a stupor so it's easier to manage them. You may need to find a different way to teach him. Is your end goal to get him to sit still and do his work like everyone else, or to cause him to truly learn the material? I'm not saying you should let him distract the class, but in order to really teach him, you will likely need to get a bit creative.
3 :
Of course. Do not let him use his undiagnosed "ADD" as an excuse. He probably has for some time....it is not an excuse. But is something that needs to be worked on. It does sound like he either simply needs someone to help him focus or wants attention. I have had several students who could not do the work, but if I sat there with them while they did it, helping them check as they go, they did great. My personal experience is many of these students are basically told to shut up and stop bothering mom and dad at home, and simply need attention. You may be able to ween him off of this as your progress with him. Children with ADD (or just active) are very individualistic, you really just have to find out what works for them. Below are several sites that have many suggestions and links that may help you. http://www.as.wvu.edu/~scidis/add.html http://www.teachervision.fen.com/add-and-adhd/resource/10503.html http://www.proteacher.com/040020.shtml Good luck. Teaching these students can be very trying. I would suggest making nice with the parents. Often times if you have them "on board" with you...on the same page, it makes many problems go away.
4 :
ADD is a very real issue for some, but this child may have other learning disabilities. It is odd that he only completed a portion of your test before becoming unruly. Perhaps he has a reading disability. I am not sure that ADD should be listed as the reason he cannot complete the test. I have worked with severely ADD children and they try very hard to complete tasks and have the teacher be proud of them. Perhaps since this child has had many teachers, maybe he is getting attention from his behavior. Perhaps the child feels ignored until he misbehaves and then mom gives him the attention and switches his teachers, putting the blame for his behavior somewhere else. Perhaps he is also depressed, it can happen. You don't mention how much time has passed with the 4 different teachers, but perhaps this child has been told directly or indirectly that he is a failure and is now living up to expectations.
5 :
I had a student with ADHD in my classroom last year. Even though she could read at a fourth grade level (in first grade) and perform math at a third grade level, she could not finish any assignment or test. For assignments, I allowed her to take a short break at certain points throughout the assignment. This gave her an incenttive to work on things if she knew she would get a break to color for five minutes. When testing her, I would often do parts of a test with her. For math, I would get out manipulatives to test the same objectives the other studets were being tested over. Some people would say this is not "fair," but it is. It is "fair" to help each student with what THEY need, which is not always the same as everyone else. Good luck!

What do you think about Taiwan!?

What do you think about Taiwan!?
I am a senior high school student living in Taiwan !! I want got to know morre information from international view !! Do you think Taiwan is a country or not and what do u think about Taiwan !!? Thanks for your answer !!

I think that Taiwan (Republic of China) is much better than Mainland "people's republic of" China (quotes because it is a misnomer).
2 :
You know, I really don't understand how China can claim Taiwan like that. However, in the end, I don't think it will matter. Taiwan will most likely join China anyway in an effort to ride on the economic success.
3 :
I see Taiwan as what China should have done. I like the way they went ahead and followed the Chinese constitution after WWII instead of becoming communist a couple of years later. Like Hong Kong they prospered independent of China for decades. In the end I think that Taiwan will end up joining China with special allowences the way Hong Kong joined back after British rule in 1997. I would hate to see Taiwan any less than it is today. BTW I am an American
4 :
Taiwan, is certainly a country, and should stand up to the Chinese and fight to the death for its independence. And if the U.S. has any nuts, it will stand with Taiwan and fight too.
5 :
I think they should have held the Olympics in Taiwan. Taiwan is everything China should have become. During the Communist Revolution in China, the cream of the crop moved to Taiwan. Socialist countries around the world have helped China gain an obscene amount of unwarranted power which they have used for the most part on their own people. I hope the world gives Taiwan the respect it deserves for getting a clue about free markets before much of the rest of the world. Much of the rest of the world still hasn't gotten that clue.
6 :
From the international point of view, Taiwan is not a country. The Republic of China on Taiwan is not a country either. Obviously, Taiwan is not a part of the PRC, but at the same time it is not an independent and sovereign nation. For a simple overview, it is important to recognize that the ROC in Taiwan is (1) a subordinate occupying power, beginning Oct. 25, 1945, and (2) a government in exile, beginning mid-December 1949. Taiwan territory does not belong to the ROC.

"Most lizards are born from eggs, but a few are born from their mother's body." How about "mothers' bodies"?

"Most lizards are born from eggs, but a few are born from their mother's body." How about "mothers' bodies"?
I'm an EFL teacher from Taiwan. A student got me a question as my title. For those of u who r native speakers, please explain the difference between the two sentences below, 1. Most lizards are born from eggs, but a few are born from their mother's body. 2. Most lizards are born from eggs, but a few are born from their mothers' bodies. Thanks a lot! BTW, I've asked some Americans here, their first instinctive choice is no.1 sentence. But a few is a plural pronoun, we should put "mothers' bodies" instead, shouldn't we? BTW2, I wish the question to be answered by English speakers. And please also compare the difference between the 2 phrases. Thank u very much.
Words & Wordplay - 6 Answers

1 :
mothers' is correct...the lizards have more than one mother.
2 :
I believe sentence #1 is correct. True, "a Few" is plural, but as we know in nature, a mother can give birth to more than one offspring. Sentence #2 infers that more than one mother can give birth to the same offspring......
3 :
The second one suggest each Lizard born from a Body has more then one Mother and is born from more then one body. [Or more exact,.. it suggest a single mother has more then one body] The first is correct. You did catch on. [ Nevermind,.. I had to pay more attention to what you suggested... you are saying that both Lizard's have more then one mother AND lizard's mothers have more then one body. That is incorrect,.. number 1 is correct.] Added: Okay a break down. When the Sentences say A Few and move on to the description, it is saying in the cases of each Lizard of those few,.. not all as a collective. This is what A, Few, and Their creates. You do not want to say there is a single mother that is giving birth to ALL THE LIZARDS in the WORLD born from a body. So in a case by case basis For those few, each is born from their Mother's Body. [Someone is messing with me in reality because they want to hurt me and break things.] Were you to change it, you were to be saying in the second that each Lizard's mother has more then one body. Were you to word it as you are asking " Mothers' Bodies" you would be saying each Lizard has MORE THEN ONE Mother and is born out of these multiple mothers' bodies. If you are confused about the point of "their", it's just a substitute for " His or Hers". It just avoids dealing with gender.
4 :
The first one can be correct if you are talking about one mother lizard and her few offspring. Otherwise, it would be wrong because of the word their, because their obviously indicates more than one. The second is correct because it's obvious that you are talking about more than one mother and more than one offspring.
5 :
Sentence one is correct because the plural possessive pronoun 'their' refers to the plural pronoun 'few,' while 'mother's' indicates that each lizard has a single mother.
6 :
#2 is correct because you are using "few" as plural "types" which clearly have different mothers since they are not the same species. (#1 is wrong because it means the lizards come from the same mother, which is not the case.) To be more clear, you could say a "few species" or a "few types": Most lizards are born from eggs, but a few species are * born live. * born from their mothers' bodies. * born from the mother's body. ================================= Note 1: "Mothers' bodies" implies the lizards have several mothers *together as a group* which is correct; it does NOT mean that the lizards have more than one mother *each*, as some people incorrectly responded. There are several wrong answers. Other examples regarding possessive plurals: If the children have the same mother: "The twins are at their mother's house." If the children have different mothers: "All the foster children were returned to their mothers' houses." This does NOT mean any of the children has more than one mother. Since they have separate mothers, together as a group there are several mothers. Note 2: I am a native speaker and have edited and proofread for academic and professional publication and public presentations.

Hi, I've visited taipei, and yes, they require travelling visa if you have philippines passport. You have to go in person: Taipei Economic and Cultural Office in the Philippines Address 41F, Tower 1, RCBC Plaza, 6819 Ayala Avenue, Makati City 1200, Metro Manila, Philippines Phone (002-63-2) 8876688 Fax (002-63-2) 8877679 Hours of operation Monday ~ Friday, 08:45~11:30(Receiving time) 13:30~16:30(Dispatching time) Closed on Taiwan and Philippine Public Holidays Points to consider when applying for a visa: 1. Make sure you have another piece if ID that you can leave with the security guard at the entrance of the consulate 2. Bring your ticket or itinerary showing your departure out of Taiwan. Make sure your attire is presentable, no shorts, torn clothes, sandals etc. 3. Usual service is 3 business days and express is 1 business day. Note: this is after the application has been received. So in fact you drop off one day and can pick it up the next day. 4. Application fee is 1950 pesos - Rush service 1000 pesos 5. You must bring 2 passport photos with your application (there is a passport photo shop near the consulate. 6. Bring your ticket or itinerary showing your departure out of Taiwan. 7. You will need an employment authorization from the Council of Affairs if you are applying for a resident visa in order to get an ARC. 8. If you are applying for a tourist visa, you will need proof of financial support such as a bank account statement showing sufficient funds. Hope this helps.

I'm a student from Taiwan and holding a F1/OPT right now. my OPT will be expired in 04 September 08. I am planning to travel to Canada by driving on 08/03/2008 - 08/10/2008, if I have all the employee letter, OPT card, I-20 ...etc. all the documents, will it be a good idea to leave United state just a month before my OPT expired? am i going to have hard time re-enter the United State? and also, Canada tourist Visa is require for taiwanese, if I travel by driving. no round trip ticket. will that be okay to apply for canada tourist visa? Thank you

If you only holds OPT, I don't recommend you to travel outside of the US at all. All international student advisors should tell their students that holding an OPT does not mean you can re-enter the US. Most students who hold OPT do not go travel within this year because it's very possible to get rejected at the border when enter, not to mention that you will be leaving one month prior the exp. date. Because your opt expiring in one month and you do not show how you are going to prove to the CAN border that you will not overstay in Canada. I doubt if you can even get into Can. border. You may be rejected at the border. In terms of visa, yes, you do need one. Whether or not it's ok, you need to apply for one. Otherwise, how can you cross the border? However, you do have a great possibility to get rejected, due to the reasons I have already explained above.

Taiwan-wanna make malaysian friends in Taichung?

For those who have their further study in Taiwan, usually they won't come back to Malaysia just because Malaysia is using Malay language as formal language. Most of the student who did their further study in Taiwan are not very good in Malay. (Sorry for that command). But to be honest, this is not the main problem. Is "racing" problem... I am working with Malaysian government. I still remember, I was not being orientated until one week after report duty to my station. If a Malay is coming for reporting, the office people will straight away orientate him/her and show him/her around. I am very pity to my new Pengarah, he is a Chinese man. Same thing had happen to him like me before... (Even he has the high post) Back to your question, regarding parties and meeting, usually over sea student they will have it. May be you need to find out someone you know who had been study to Taiwan. All the best.
3 :
you should go to the area by the train station theres alot of malaysian there hung around all the time

can anyone tell me about how to obtain scholarship to Stanford and NYU respectively?
i am an international student from Taiwan and i intend to achieve my scholar degree in the US ...please tell me the ways and criteria to get scholarship ! i am interested in the department of creative writing and fashion design...or something about mag editing....

1 :
First of all, call the school and ask that particular department for scholarship requirements. A friend of mine got into Stanford on a scholarship last year, BUT she also had a perfect score on the SAT, too. You may have to lower your standards a bit.
2 :
Both schools have programs in creative writing, but only NYU has a program in journalism, and neither school teaches fashion design. Very few schools offer scholarships to international undergraduate students, I'm afraid. Only if you are really outstanding in your field would you be considered for a scholarship if they have any which accommodate international students at any school, and at these in particular, since they are extremely selective schools. You may want to contact the financial aid offices at both schools, if you are really interested, to find out if they offer any such scholarships.

what is the university life like in America?

what is the university life like in America?
Hi~there My name is angela Wang and I am a college student in Taiwan. I am just wondering what is the life like in American universities? Is it really so interesting and colorful like the movies we see on TV? What do you usually do or like to do after school? I am quite curious about it, can you tell me more about it no matter where you from in America, please? Thank you! P.S please forgive me if there are any grammar mistakes.I am still trying to learn English well.thanks.

Do not trust TV. Not all students act like in the American Pie or Road Trip. It really depends on the person. I guess it is pretty much like in Taiwan. Most people from other countries think US universities are easy but the top universities in US can be pretty tough. People have to take more electives in US than other Commonwealth countries. Some states may also have history or language requirements which is rare in other countries. More exams and projects in US. Sure you can also choose to have a life like movies in US if you can. All it takes is popularity, money and sex appeals (just like everywhere else.) I think Australia has the easiest higher education system.
2 :
Your grammer seems to be coming along nicely. Your punctuation is good enough to think that you are well versed in english. As for university life, it really depends on what university you attend. Some private schools are very selective and frown upon the debauchery that you would see in the average hollywood film. Others are exactly what you would see in those films. Fraternities and sororities can party like no one's business, but what you don't see a lot of are their acts of charity. If you decide to go to a state funded university, be prepared for dorm life. You will be meeting all types of people from all walks of life. Thankfully, tolerance is highly promoted and you should not have any real problems with people who are less tolerable. There are usually gathering centers and advice centers for those who are from foreign countries, and should you have a problem, there will be someone to help you. Good luck on your endeavors, and should you seek an education in the U.S. I hope that you find the experience enjoyable and culturally stimulating.

Do north Korean and south Korean want to reunify together as one nation someday like China and Taiwan do?

Do north Korean and south Korean want to reunify together as one nation someday like China and Taiwan do?
here in US i heard north Korean students and south Korean students don't really talk to each other. but they ARE the same people. it's kind of sad that people alienate each other just because of different government system even though they are both the same flesh and blood.
Korea - 4 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Your understand is a bit flawed. China wants to take over Taiwan, Taiwan wants to continue to be a free county not under the rule of communist China. It is not to be reunified, China does not recognize Taiwan as an independent country.
2 :
China wants to take control of taiwan, but neither does Taiwan or the US want taiwan to be controlled by China, so no, china and taiwan kind of hate each other. As for NK and SK, both Governments always spout how much they want to reunify in order to gain votes and sympathy, but truth be told, reunifying SK and NK would be horrible for the economy of SK, US and china, NK has nothing to lose, except power...There will be no reunification unless NK completely collapses and is taken over by SK or china.
3 :
China and US is using NK/SK, respectively, as a leverage to keep each other in check, there's a reason NK runs to China all the time for help when something comes up and they're the ones who meet up with US to calm the situation down. When Yunpyung do was bombed recently, why did China suddenly get involved in it? All the troops and nukes they might have is nothing but a show-off to scare normal citizens, NK knows they'd blow up to pieces in seconds if they were to use that to start a war or anything... this isn't 1950s when NK were better off than SK (yeah it was true). Unless China goes down like the Soviets did when Germany was split (there's a chance since they're communist regime, but they have WAY too many people for this to actually happen, lol) or US does (lolx2), or NK's government crumbles themselves (unlikely since China will probably help them), I don't think reunification is possible anytime soon.
4 :
It would be more like East and West Germany, in that the country was divided at the end of world war 2. Yes there are many families that have been separated and would like to be together again. The problem is that China does not want the U.S. military near its border or having influence in all of Korea. The country may reunite, but probably not for many years.

you just get married like any other couple, then she applies for citizenship
2 :
The process of getting married is the same, regardless where she was from. The only difference would be for her to bring in her passport as formal ID, at the county office. But it's best you first visit your girlfriend's family in Taiwan. And during a second visit, with everyone's consents, you ask for permission of getting married. After you receive the marriage certificate, you petition and sponsor for her green card. Go to USCIS web site to get the detail.

Keychain from Taiwan?

Keychain from Taiwan?
My friend, an exchange student from Taiwan, gave me a keychain from her country today. It looks like some type of lion holding a sword in it's mouth. It has a giant yellow beard and black eyebrows with yellow spots on them. There is a yin yang on it's forehead. On the back there is another yin yang with some symbols around it. Does anybody know what this thing is? Here is the front: http://i676.photobucket.com/albums/vv121/Thumdarr/DSC02967.jpg Here's the back: http://i676.photobucket.com/albums/vv121/Thumdarr/DSC02968.jpg

Chinese lions are usually used for guardian spirits, or good luck. So it could be either a good luck charm that she bought before coming to give out as a gift, or it could be just a random charm that she liked or thought was good to represent Taiwan. >Edit< I am going to ask some of my friends what they significance of this particular lion is, because as I have learned there are different meanings to the different styles. Until then the characters on it mean Front: 王 = wáng -> king; monarch Back: Ã¥®‰ = ān -> peaceful; at ease; undisturbed; tranquil; calm æ°¸ = yÇ’ng -> everlasting; forever 康 = kāng -> well-being; health 保 = bÇŽo -> protect; defend In my opinion it seems to be a guardian charm for someone who is traveling, but I am not going to say that is what this one. Just don't read too much in to the gift its self Taiwanese love to give gifts to people who help them, especially exchange students. I know this from experience working with my universities Intensive English Program, and meeting several large groups of Taiwanese students.

I'm guessing that what you have is a "Foo Dog"; it's half lion and half dragon. They are refered to as "Shi" (pronounced "shuhr") in Chinese, and are intended to ward off evil spirits. http://www.tattoosymbol.com/gallery/foo-dog-tattoo.html http://www.bugei.com/product_1180_detailed.htm They are associated with swords, but I haven't yet seen one depicted with a sword in its mouth. Now... Go! And, get your snowglobe repaired quickly. hahaha

Why does the P.R. of China claim Taiwan to be part of there Empire?

Why does the P.R. of China claim Taiwan to be part of there Empire?
I have a Chinese female student in my class, shes nasty to the Taiwanese student. The Chiense student claims Taiwan is not independent, what a silly girl. She says that the CCP defeated the KMT. If the KMT were really defeated they would not had been able to make it to Taiwan. She says that the KMT government shouldn't really there, but the KMT where in control of China before the CPP. How can I show her that the CCP are the ones who illegally took over the mainland or should I just sent her to the school councillor recommending psychiatric treatment.

China are trying to rule the world
2 :
I remember how in Asian Studies, the teacher predicted that Taiwan would be invaded before the Olympic games. Obviously because the government regime wants more power.
3 :
The fact that Taiwan has always been `China`´s territory is undeniable, but it´s debatable on the `form of China` it should be to incorporate Taiwan with the Mainland. Many Chinese in the Mainland prefer KMT rule over CCP but seems quite impossible to bring that to reality in anytime soon.
4 :
From your description, I surmise that the young lady has "some issues" concerning her homeland. Young minds are easily swayed by the propaganda generated by powerful authoritarian regimes such as that found in China. It may take years of intense therapy for her to come to grips with having been programmed to dominate and abuse the rights of others, and the discovery that reality doesn't match her belief system. She may just end up in a mental ward for life, or in jail as an anti-social psychopath.
5 :
The PRC claims Taiwan because their government is ignorant and self-centered. As for your student... She's just another victim of CPC propaganda. Poor thing. @zerious - Whether or not Taiwan has "always been China's territory" is not only deniable, such a claim is contrary to well-established facts. Perhaps you've forgotten that the Japanese held Taiwan for 50 years, and the aboriginals owned it for about 5,000 years before the Chinese showed up. Thanks for your support of the ROC.
6 :
You should educate her like the way Mao Ze Dung used. A re-education camp in a discrete place with all the educational equipments you need, such as electric wires connected to a car battery, a hanging rope with a large basin underneath filled with water and live piranhas inside, some hot coals and iron brand, leather whips, a large barefoot walkway filled with salt and broken glasses. Student like her will need the best education, Mao Ze Dung proved that this will work, so you must apply the same method and principles as Mao did.

I want to go to University in Taiwan...How do I do it???

I want to go to University in Taiwan...How do I do it???
I was an exchange student to Taiwan for over 10 months and I have learned the language (Mandarin Chinese) to an extent to which I could live on my own in Taiwan. But my Chinese isn't good enough to sit in a classroom and actually learn every single thing that's said. I would like my Chinese to get to the point of which I will be able to take full classes in Chinese. But first I'll have to find a University in Taiwan that will take me. I want to do my entire University career in Taiwan. I will have to take all my classes in English of course. So my question is, Where can I find a College that will teach in English? I don't want to go just to learn Chinese. Of course I'll want to perfect my Chinese but I'll have to actually take all of the normal college courses first. I don't want to just spend a single year learning just the language abroad...I want to spend my entire career and life abroad!!! Which University can I go to??? I also don't even know where to go to ask. I'm in my senior year of high school and running out of time. I need to find a place to go (in Taiwan) NOW!!!

Hello, Go check the link of Ministry of Education website below. You could find some useful information and you may email them with your question as well: http://english.moe.gov.tw In addition, the Mandarin Training Center of National Taiwan Normal University (NTNU) is offering programs which dedicated to the teaching of Chinese culture and Chinese as a second language. All levels of standard and Classical Chinese as well as Chinese culture are taught there. A friend of my sister took a summer course there few years ago, and I remember that he enjoyed it a lot. Check this link below: http://mtc.ntnu.edu.tw/indexe.html Good luck!

studying in taiwan?

studying in taiwan?
I'm keen to take up a master degree in journalism in National Taiwan University. I've a few questions here: 1) I'm good in Chinese but am only exposed to Simplified Chinese. I can read Traditional Chinese but can't really write (on the other hand, typing wouldn't be a problem because I can recognise the characters). Will the inability to write Traditional Chinese be a problem? Or is there any chance I could actually write my exam scripts in Simplified Chinese? 2) Is it possible to complete the degree in 1-1.5 years? I know that traditionally, master degrees are completed in about 2 years, but I do wish to complete it in a shorter period of time. Will really appreciate any form of suggestions or comments. If you're a current NTU student or an international student in Taiwan, or if you have lots of knowledge regarding this, I'll really appreciate it if you could drop me an email at xdette@hotmail.com for further correspondence. Thanks! gary>> Thanks for your response. Just to answer one of your question, I'm a graduate. Also wondering about point 3 in your answer about learning tc in china - I believe china uses sc, no?

1) i doubt so...sc is not popular or as the content of education for taiwanese educational system..so only using informally will do it, u probably have to learn how to write in tc during summer then take the classes 2) depend on the program, u grad or undergrad? its the same else where though...of course if u prefer to finish master in 1 or 1.5, u can appeal for school' credits system and go for overload and then u should be able to take more classes. The point is you can only jump or go over load to finish quicker though. 3) my best suggestion is you learn tc in china then go to NTU later...

1. The Universities here all expect your written work to be in Traditional Chinese (unless of course your taking one of the special English courses some places offer). Saying as your Chinese is already really good, why don't you just take a little time to learn Traditional - it's not all that difficult and you'll end up with a deeper appreciation for the language, not to mention - you'll actually be able to see the meaning within the characters! I actually have a lot of exp with the Chinese Culture University, they do indeed have a good Mandarin learning centre; however, more importantly - I actually know that if students use simplified characters in an exam or thesis they will get points deducted... haha, the younger generation is so used to typing that they sometimes forget how to write the traditional character for a certain word and just opt to write the simplified version instead.
2 :
I have studied in Taiwan You will have to read and write in the traditional characters. You may have to go to a Mandarin training center before you actually enter as a matriculated student. try Chinese Culture University in Taipei Taiwan
3 :
It depends on what̢۪s your major if you would like to write your exam scripts in Simplified Chinese. I am not a NTU student but I could figure it out for you if I know what your major is. Currently I live in Taipei. It would be my pleasure to help you out if any.

Can someone tell me about the lifestyle/education in Taiwan?

Can someone tell me about the lifestyle/education in Taiwan?
I would like to hear opinions from people that have been or lived there. My parents are not Asian but they were both raised in Asia. They want me to consider going to TW..to study at a university.and make a lifestly over there. Now I don't know nothin bout TW except its like next to China. I feel that if I end up goin there, I'll be outta place and unexcepted, especially when my IQ is..um...looooow compare to the student in TW. I've heard that the education there is ridiculously harsh! and people here in America still complain that there's too much work to be done. What do TW have for an adventurous, outgoing, kinda ghetto type of person?

That's impressive. Most of people do not know where it is :) "I feel that if I end up goin there, I'll be outta place and unexcepted, especially when my IQ is..um...looooow compare to the student in TW. I've heard that the education there is ridiculously harsh!" That is absolutely correct. However! If you are not attending graduate school, the colleges and the universities are relatively easy. You just need a passing grade to graduate. Most of the textbooks are in English (not Chinese). According the newspaper, 99% of the students, who took the joint college examination this year, are eligible to go to colleges or univeristies. I remember couple years ago they have a brain dead student graduated from the university. Either I am really brain dead or what!!! Top reasons going to Taiwan to study: 1. does GPA have a strong influence on my application for college?

does GPA have a strong influence on my application for college?
i am a high school student from Taiwan . i transferred to NYC when i was in grade 10 which means that i didn't study the ninth grade in the US so my grade-nine GPA was transferred and some of my credits were denied due to some regulations of the US educational system. if i score high on both the two of the critical exams -- TOEFL and SAT...can these high sores and extracurriculars and some awards of competitions cover the flaw in my GPA?
Higher Education (University +) - 8 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
i know from experience. High SAT scores can help u so much
2 :
maybe, but GPA is still important, a high one would almost guarantee your entrance into a school of your choice. Good Luck!
3 :
It depends on the college but most just look at SAT/ACT scores. You high school GPA usually only comes in handy when applying for scholarships.
4 :
It sounds like you have some special circumstances. I think that most schools will look at your record and take that into account (that you transferred and had difficulty with your credits), and will try not to hold it against you. Also, a high SAT score should help. I have never taken the TOEFL, but I suspect the better you perform the better off you will be as an applicant (although there are other parts of your application that help to indicate your proficiency in English as well). One final thing you have working in your favor is that you came from overseas. Colleges, generally speaking, like to include people of diverse cultural, social, and linguistic backgrounds in their classes, so you make a good applicant in that respect. Best of luck on your applications!
5 :
GPA is considered, but I had a 2.8 and got into a pretty tough school because my scores on both the ACT and SAT were very high. So just go for it, you never know until you try.
6 :
Many colleges list GPA as being more important than SAT scores. GPA is from the entire year, SAT is from 1 or 2 days. Many colleges are actually going SAT/ACT free. No tests scores required. If you EXPLAIN to the college what happened however, I am sure they would totally understand the situation and your test scores for the SAT would back that up. Many admission officers think that is you have a low GPA and high test scores that you are smart but lazy. You have a reason for the lower GPA which shows that is NOT the case with you. On the other hand low test scores with a high GPA can show that one does not test well, isn't very good at reasoning but can handle class work, or that they may have been ill on test day.
7 :
first off, to the guy who said most schools "only look at sat", clearly has no idea what hes talking about. NO school values the sat more than the gpa. its the other way around- they look at your gpa first and foremost before ANYTHING. it is by far the most important thing on your app, period. and to answer your question, it depends how low your gpa is; many schools have a cutoff- as in they will not even look at the students application if their gpa is under, say a 2.5 (thats for most mid or lower-ranked state schools, not the more prestigious colleges; theirs would be substantially higher). i guess the answer to this depends on what schools you are applying to- if its harvard, yale, brow, upenn, etc, they want the whole package- you cant have any flaws in your application at all. sat is important, but not nearly coming close to the importance of the gpa- you took the sat in one day and your gpa shows your dedication to school throughout the last 4 years
8 :
Definitely not. In our barbaric soceity, it is a test of strength, not of intelligence that wins college acceptances. At your next exam, merely eviscerate your teacher and bath in his blood. Afterwords, apply at KFC and jizz in the cash register. Hilary Clinton riding an emu.

I want to marry a non-american Ph.D student... How?
Ok so we've been talking and want to marry. Here is the situation: She is here in Honolulu for 5 years, working towards her Ph.D. She already has her I-20 form, and has a scholarship. How would i go about the marriage process, and if/when we get married, would that affect her education/scholarship since she'd be an american citizen? could she return to taiwan to visit? Help XD
Higher Education (University +) - 1 Answers

First of all, congratulations! Second - most PhD students aren't here on "scholarship", persay. They are funded by their universities. That's based on academic factors, and not usually on citizenship issues; but for details on how her marriage might affect her funding, she'll need to speak directly to her PhD program adminstrators. I suspect it won't impact her funding at all, but again, she should ask. However, some foreign students are here, sponsored by their home governments. If this is her arrangement, then she'd need to speak directly with her gov't, and yes, getting married could mess that up. I am not a pro on visa issues when it comes to changing from one type of visa to another. The US State Department are the experts on this. You're going to need to address your questions to them. Start at their website. BTW, once she's an American citizen - officially, after you're married and etc. - she can return to Taiwan as she pleases, without a problem reentering the US. She'd be a citizen, same as you, and could enter the US just as you can. Once you're a citizen, you're a citizen. As an additional aside, you want to start documenting your relationship now, for the citizenship interviews after you're married. Take photos of the two of you together, for example.

It's not what you asked for (sorry). But, there is no such place known as 'University Road'. However, There is a long road in Taipei (Da-An District) called He-ping Don Lu (He-ping East Road), which has 3 universities on it and next to the Guting MRT station you can find numerous art stores on either side of the road, there must be at least 10 - 15 art stores all together.

There aren't any good lawyers so how could there be a good tv show about them?
2 :
I don't know. Here in the States we are hard pressed to find an honest and decent lawyer with morales.
3 :
Law & Order, seasons 1-15. In fact, this show was tagged as a "procedural". You'll see a case (usually a murder), from the discovery of the victim's body by a civilian or a 'beat cop', to the arrest and charging of the main suspect (?), to the district attorney's summation and the verdict. You'll see the detectives' investigative methods and the "wheeling and dealing" between the DA and the defense attorney and some of the techniques they use to press for more leads or evidence. You'll also hear lots of law terminology. Make sure to get the "original" series, not the spin-offs, like Law & Order: CI (Criminal Intent), or Law & Order: SVU (Special Victims Unit). They are even less "procedural". Sadly, in more recent seasons, the show strays from procedure (no more summation), and increases the drama elements such as interpersonal story/history. This is to compete with other police shows that started doing this, and gained viewers because of it.
4 :
"Law and Order", which is current and popular now. "LA Law" was popular some years ago, but it may be hard to find.

Bahn- Xeo ( ban, say-oh) these are coconut crepes, coloured yellow with turmeric filled with shrimp bean sprouts and SOO GOOD!!! I had them in Hanoi and I almost wept- they are just fantastic. The filling can be chicken, pork or a mix of fish and meat, like pork and prawns. Rice Batter 2 cups rice flour 1/4 teaspoon turmeric powder 1/2 teaspoon salt 1 1/2 cup water 3/4 cup canned coconut milk 3 scallions, thinly sliced on extreme angle, about 1/4 inch thick Fillings: 1 cup lard or vegetable oil 1/4 lb. pork shoulder, cut into thin slices 1/4 lb. small shrimp, peeled and deveined, slices in halves lengthwise 1/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup sliced yellow onions, about 1/8 inch thick 1 to 2 medium long red chilies, sliced thinly into rings, about 1/8 inch thick 3/4 cups sliced mushrooms, 1/8 inch slices 2 cups bean sprouts (trimmed preferred) Method: In a large bowl whisk together the rice flour, turmeric and salt. Add water and coconut milk and whisk until smooth. Strain if there are lumps. Set batter to rest for 30 minutes. Heat up a 10-inch non-stick saute pan over high heat. Add 1 tablespoon lard/oil and then add one portion of pork, shrimp, onions and mushrooms. Stir fry until pork and shrimp are half done, and ladle 1/2 cup of batter into pan. Swirl pan to coat bottom evenly. Add bean sprouts over half the crepe (on the right). Drizzle another 1 tablespoon of lard/oil around outer edge of crepe and lower heat to medium. Cover pan and cook for 1 minute. Remove cover and continue to cook until edges begin to brown. Loosen crepe from bottom of pan with a soft silicon spatula (hard spatula would break the crepe). When bottom turns light brown and crispy, fold crepe to encase bean sprouts. Places pieces of cooked banh xeo inside a lettuce leaf, dip in nuoc cham and eat immediately. Another one here which was my favourite and is REALLY good when you do it right, ( I never had it wrong I guess, soo....) is Ca Kho To - caramelized fish. You serve it with noodles or rice, I preferred the noodles http://ravenouscouple.blogspot.com/2009/08/ca-kho-to-vietnamese-braised-fish-in.html for the Taiwanese, I love this stie but have never cooked Taiwanese form it before. I grew up in Malaysia where the food is MUSTAHAK!! very very PENTING!!! ( Very very important to have good food in malaysia- if they do not eat well, they are pissssed!!!)\ so I can guaranteee this site- have cooked many Maly dishes and Thai also from this site, and the vietnamese dishes are very good and authentic too. http://rasamalaysia.com/recipes/taiwanese-recipes/

The links are a list of stir fry recipes to choose from and 1 simple recipe. Getting ingredients for chinese dishes depend on your local market. (Taiwan is not part of Vietnam - the cooking & foods are different.) FRESH is the key word for asian dishes. Not knowing your region, I guess that this time of year you have soft squash, onions, bell peppers, garlic, green onions, celery..For meats - chicken, beef, pork or shrimp. Stir fry meat & vegetables with steamed jasmine rice is probably the easiest. The main ingredients must be fresh for best results. In addition - you will need a light soy sauce, sesame oil, reg light cooking - peanut or canola. Good luck.

Well, I'm Chinese and I really like to eat Honey Chicken, but here are a few other recipes you can enjoy! :) Honey Fried Chicken 3 lbs cut-up chicken 3/4 cup honey 3/4 to 1 cup buttermilk baking mix (such as Bisquik) 2 tsp dry mustard 1/2 tsp paprika Salt to taste Pepper to taste Vegetable oil Coat chicken pieces with honey; set aside. Combine the baking mix, mustard, paprika, salt and pepper together. Dredge chicken pieces in the baking mix mixture. Pour enough oil in a 12-inch heavy skillet to reach a depth of 1/2-inch. Allow oil to heat to 375 degrees over medium heat. Carefully place the chicken pieces in the hot oil and cook about 5 minutes or until underside of pieces is golden brown. Turn chicken pieces and cook another 5 minutes. Reduce heat and cook for 7 to 10 minutes longer or until the chicken juices run clear. Drain chicken pieces on paper toweling. What should I study next for getting a future job in America?

What should I study next for getting a future job in America?
I'm a senior college student from Taiwan, right now I feel pretty confused about my future: I have a bachelor of Russian language, and I've attended Student Association at school for 3 years (as vice chairman for 1 year) , I want to get my master degree in America. Actually I'll immigrate to America legally soon, so I need to study something that helps my future career, the problem is, I have no idea what to study. My aunt who works for America military told me to study Computer Science, cuz she thinks I can get a good job with it. She also told me as a foreigner, what I'm interested in- international relationship, international journalism, marketing, and language, won't help me to get any good paying job. To her, only high-tech job will help Asian to make a living. Is that true? I've got answers from some nice friends that being a translator might not be a good choice. Can anyone give me some more idea what I can study for my possible future job instead of Chinese teacher? Thx

Actually, if your English is good, Marketing and Public Relations are pretty high paying jobs. You can do marketing for high-tech companies, all kinds of companies. Not in the beginning, mind you. But after a few years in the field, you can expect to make good money. Also, there is a lot of travel/communication between the US (mostly western) and Asia in this field.

Listen to your aunt!! And you will always have a great job!!!

In the Us there was an article on front page of Yahoo...I cannot find it at this minute but it told of the areas where US employers are looking to fill jobs. As I recall they were sales reps for every industry in high demand; technical trades: auto mechanics, electrical, plumbing skills,...to names a couple three. In order to succeed, you should be trained in areas where we are looking to fill those openings. good luck..and wow. You're very well educated!

Options are boundless, only limited by your imagination and sprit; free your mind. Information systems is a hot field where you can write your ticket pretty much worldwide. Networking and security systems would be my specific recommendation in the computer field. Langugae is a great field, intrepreting and teaching as you mentioned; both great options. The health care field continues to grow in the US and abroad. There are many opportunities in that field from caregiving to administration. Law enforcement is a growing field from enforcement, and administration to corrections. Not a field I would recommend, but nevertheless and important field that will remain and grow. Corporate business provides unlimited options; use your language skills as a writer of administrative or technical documents. Most important is what are you good at and like to do? If you can find that field and break in you will have met total success in your life guaranteed. Consider the tourism industry. Many positions are there; managining, operating and maintaining properties and transportation systems. Scheduling as an agent. Dream big.

Actually I think your interests in international relationships, international journalism, marketing, and language, could actually help you get a job with many fortune 500 companies. Many companies need people who can speak foreign languages, especially in the Asian markets like Taiwan, and since we've gone into the new millennium. The world economy is slowly but surely going over to Asia. This means that people can speak both Asian languages and English will be a commodity to a company. But that's not all your other interest also allow much use into politics. ;However to go into this field you have to become a U.S. citizen. And the few people I know who done it tell me it's not that easy. But if you do choose to do that can become a translator for a statesman that is goin' over to another country,or a translator at the U.N., Maybe even a translator for news agency. You can also join the U.S. military and since you do have degrees most likely be put up as an officer. These are the only ones I can think of right now so I hope I've been some help to you.
